His musical style is often described as having Rococo charm, lightness, and optimism. He was a master of the galante style, which focuses on elegance and grace. Boccherini is highly regarded for his melodic and rhythmic invention. His work often reflects the musical traditions of Spain, where he lived for much of his life. This fusion of Italian skill and Spanish influence created a unique sound in the 18th century.

Boccherini significantly changed how chamber music was composed and performed. In the Classical period, composers like Joseph Haydn often used the cello as a background instrument. The cello usually provided simple accompaniment for the higher instruments. Boccherini changed this by bringing the cello to a prominent, starring role. He pioneered a specific type of string quintet. Instead of using two violins, two violas, and one cello, he often used two violins, a viola, and two cellos. This allowed the cello to lead the musical conversation.

His massive body of work includes many different types of compositions. He wrote approximately 30 symphonies and 12 virtuoso cello concertos. His chamber music is especially vast, featuring nearly 100 string quartets. He also composed over 100 string quintets for his specialized two-cello ensemble. Beyond strings, he wrote a dozen guitar quintets. These works often included the lively Spanish dance known as a fandango. His music is catalogued using the "G" numbering system from the musicologist Yves Gérard.

Boccherini was born into a musical household in Lucca, Italy, in 1743.

He was the third child of Leopoldo Boccherini, a cellist and double-bass player. Luigi began his musical training at age five under his father's guidance. At age nine, he studied with Abbé Vanucci at the San Martino cathedral. When he was thirteen, he traveled to Rome to study with Giovanni Battista Costanzi. In 1757, he and his father moved to Vienna to work at the Burgtheater.

In 1768, Boccherini moved to Madrid, which became a central location for his career. In 1770, he began working for Infante Luis Antonio of Spain. The Infante was the younger brother of King Charles III. Boccherini flourished under this royal patronage for several years. However, a conflict arose when the King demanded a change to a musical passage. Boccherini chose to double the passage instead of changing it. This act of artistic defiance led to his immediate dismissal from the royal service.

Despite losing royal support, Boccherini found other important patrons. He worked for the French ambassador, Lucien Bonaparte. He also received support from King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. The King was an amateur musician who played the cello and flute. Boccherini spent time in towns like Arenas de San Pedro and Candeleda. It was in these locations that he composed many of his most famous works. His music eventually reached a global audience through various recordings and even modern films.

Later in life, Boccherini faced significant personal hardships and loss. He lost his Spanish patron in 1785, the same year his first wife died. He also suffered the loss of his four daughters between 1796 and 1804. His second wife passed away in 1805, the same year he died in Madrid. He was survived by two sons, José Antonio and Christina. His remains stayed in the Pontifical Basilica of St. Michael until 1927. At that time, they were moved back to his home city of Lucca. He is now buried in the church of San Francesco.
