Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was a prominent Roman patrician and statesman during the early Roman Republic. A patrician was a member of the wealthy, high-ranking social class in Rome. Cincinnatus is most famous for being a model of civic virtue, which means acting for the good of the community. His life story highlights the tension between personal power and service to the state.

While modern historians debate some specific details of his life, he is widely accepted as a real historical figure. He served as a suffect consul in 460 BC and held the position of dictator in 458 BC and possibly again in 439 BC.

The office of dictator was a specific mechanism used by the Roman Republic during extreme emergencies. Unlike a modern dictator, a Roman dictator was a legal official appointed to hold absolute authority for a limited time. This person was meant to resolve a specific crisis and then return power to the Senate and the people. Cincinnatus became the ultimate example of how this system was supposed to work. He accepted the power when Rome was in danger, but he refused to keep it once the danger passed.

Cincinnatus's most famous period of service began in 458 BC due to a military crisis. The Aequi, a group living to the east of Rome, broke a previous treaty and attacked Roman territory. The Roman army, led by the consul L. Minucius Esquilinus Augurinus, became besieged at Mount Algidus in the Alban Hills. With only five horsemen escaping to warn the city, the Roman Senate fell into a panic. They authorized the appointment of a dictator to lead reinforcements and save the trapped army.

When senators arrived to inform Cincinnatus of his appointment, they found him working his farm. He was interrupted while ploughing his field and had to call for his wife, Racilia, to bring his senatorial toga. After dressing, he traveled across the Tiber to Rome to take command. He appointed Lucius Tarquitius as his master of the horse, a high-ranking officer. Cincinnatus then ordered all men of military age to gather at the Field of Mars. He provided twelve times the usual number of encamping spikes to help the troops quickly build defenses.

The military campaign was remarkably swift, lasting only sixteen days. At the Battle of Mount Algidus, Cincinnatus used the spikes to besiege the Aequi forces. Instead of continuing the fight, he offered the defeated group amnesty. He required the Aequi to pass under a "yoke" of three spears to show their submission. Most importantly, he demanded the surrender of their leaders and the execution of three principal offenders. Once the victory was secured, Cincinnatus immediately resigned his authority and returned to his farm.

Cincinnatus was not a perfect figure, as his family was involved in the intense social conflicts of Rome. His son, Caeso Quinctius, was a violent opponent of the plebeians, who were the common citizens of Rome. The plebeians were fighting for the Terentilian Law, which sought to create a written code of laws to limit patrician power. Caeso reportedly used gangs to drive plebeian leaders from the Forum. Some accounts say Caeso was even forced to sell his estates due to heavy fines following a legal dispute. These events show that the era was defined by deep divisions between the social classes.

Cincinnatus may have served as dictator a second time in 439 BC to stop a conspiracy. A wealthy man named Spurius Maelius was accused of plotting to become a king by buying the loyalty of the poor. Cincinnatus directed his master of the horse, Gaius Servilius Ahala, to handle the matter. The crisis ended when Maelius was killed during a pursuit. Cincinnatus resigned again after serving only twenty-one days. This second instance reinforced his reputation for rejecting permanent power.

The legacy of Cincinnatus has influenced political thought for centuries. His life became a symbol of selfless leadership and agrarian virtues like humility and hard work. This influence reached as far as the United States, where George Washington was often compared to him. Washington also chose to relinquish military command and later retired from the presidency to his farm at Mount Vernon.
