Love wave

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Earthquakes send energy through the ground in many ways. One special kind is the Love wave. These are surface waves that move the Earth side to side. They are called horizontally polarized waves. This means the ground moves in a flat line. This line is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.

Most people feel these waves during a big earthquake. They can be very dangerous to people and buildings. Love waves are a distinct class of seismic waves. They are different from P-waves and S-waves. They are also different from Rayleigh waves.

These waves work in a very specific way. They happen when a low velocity layer sits on top of a higher velocity layer. The wave is a result of many shear waves working together. These are called S-waves. The S-waves are guided by an elastic layer. One side of this layer is attached to an elastic half space. The other side borders a vacuum.

The motion of the particles forms a horizontal line. As you move deeper, the motion can change. It may decrease to a point called a node. Then the motion may increase and decrease again. The maximum motion, or amplitude, often drops fast with depth.

We know about these waves because of math. A man named Augustus Edward Hough Love predicted them. He did this in 1911. His work was published by the Cambridge University Press. It was later published again in 1967 by Dover in New York.

He used math to show how these waves exist. Scientists use special equations to describe them. One way to solve these is the propagator matrix method. This is also called the matricant approach. These tools help us understand how the Earth moves.

Love waves have unique speeds and strengths. They travel slower than P-waves and S-waves. However, they move faster than Rayleigh waves. Because they stay on the surface, they do not lose strength quickly. Their strength decays slowly as they travel. Large earthquakes can make waves that travel around the Earth many times.

This slow decay makes them very destructive. They cause damage far away from the earthquake's center. This center is called the focus or the epicentre. They are more dangerous far away than body waves. Body waves travel in three dimensions and lose strength faster.

You might notice how animals react to the ground. Some people think cats and dogs predict earthquakes. These animals are actually just very sensitive to vibrations. They can feel subtler body waves before the Love waves arrive. These early waves are the P-waves and S-waves.

It is like hearing a small sound before a loud one. The animals detect the smaller waves first. Then the big Love waves arrive to shake the surface. This helps us understand how different waves reach us. We can learn a lot by watching how the Earth moves.
