Earthquakes make the ground shake. One type of shake is called a Love wave.

A man named Augustus Love predicted these waves in 1911. These waves move the Earth side to side. They move in a flat, horizontal line. This movement is perpendicular to how the wave travels.

Love waves are surface waves. This means they stay near the top of the Earth. They happen when a soft layer sits on top of a hard layer. They travel slower than P-waves and S-waves. But they move faster than Rayleigh waves. Because they stay on the surface, they do not lose strength quickly. They can even travel around the whole Earth. This makes them very dangerous. They can break things far away from the earthquake. Most people feel these waves during a big shake.

Some animals can feel the ground move too. Cats and dogs can feel smaller waves first. These are called body waves. They arrive before the big Love waves do.
