Farrakhan is a very well-known figure in the United States. He has led many large events for his followers. One famous event was the Million Man March in 1995. This march took place in Washington, D.C. He also led the 20th anniversary of that march in 2015. His leadership has shaped the history of his organization for many years.

Before his religious work, Farrakhan had a career in music. He was a talented violinist from age five. By age 12, he toured with the Boston College Orchestra.

He also worked as a calypso singer in the 1950s. He used stage names like "The Charmer" and "Calypso Gene." He even won an award on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour in 1946. Later in life, he returned to the violin. In 1993, he performed a concerto by Felix Mendelssohn. He even played with the New World Symphony in 2021.

Farrakhan's journey into the Nation of Islam began in 1955. He met the group's teachings while performing in Chicago.

He became a member by following specific steps. He had to memorize ten questions and answers. He also wrote a special letter to the group's headquarters. After joining, he used the name Louis X. The "X" represented an African family name that was lost. Later, Elijah Muhammad gave him the name Farrakhan. This name is a version of an Arabic word.

His rise to leadership involved many important people. He served as a minister in Boston and Harlem. He worked under the leader Elijah Muhammad. After Elijah Muhammad died, his son Warith Deen Mohammed took over. Mohammed changed the group to be more orthodox. Farrakhan did not agree with these new changes. In 1979, Farrakhan started a newspaper called "The Final Call." He eventually rebuilt the Nation of Islam as his own group. He established the headquarters at Mosque Maryam.

Farrakhan is a controversial figure today. Many organizations have criticized his views. Groups like the Anti-Defamation League have condemned his antisemitic statements. He has also faced criticism for racist and sexist remarks.
