Lorine Niedecker was a famous American poet. She grew up on Black Hawk Island in Wisconsin. She loved the sights of the river. Her poems often focus on water, birds, and trees.

Life was often hard for her. She lived in a quiet, rural area. This made it difficult to share her work. She worked many jobs to get by. She even scrubbed hospital floors. Later, she married Albert Millen. This helped her find more stability.

In the 1960s, people began to love her poems again. Many poets became her friends. They helped her publish new books. She wrote books like *My Friend Tree*. She also wrote *My Life by Water*.

Today, she is a major figure in poetry. People still study her special style. Her small home is now a historic place. It is called the Lorine Niedecker Cottage. Her many poems are collected in books for us to read.
