He was born Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett in London in 1878. Throughout his life, he published more than 90 books. These works included hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, and essays. Many people consider his early writing to be the foundation of the fantasy genre.

His most famous fantasy novel is titled The King of Elfland's Daughter, written in 1924. He also wrote The Gods of Pegāna, which describes a fictional group of gods.

Life for Dunsany involved many different activities and roles. He was a captain in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the First World War. While serving, he was wounded by a bullet during the Easter Rising in 1916. He later served in the trenches and wrote for the War Office.

Dunsany was also a very talented chess player. He once played a famous match against José Raúl Capablanca and earned a draw. He even invented his own version of the game called Dunsany's Chess. This game is unique because it is asymmetrical, meaning the sides are not the same. Unlike many other chess variants, it does not use special "fairy pieces" with unusual moves.

His family history was very long and important in Ireland. He was the 18th Baron Dunsany and belonged to one of the oldest Irish peerages. He grew up in places like London and Kent, but he lived much of his life at Dunsany Castle in County Meath.

In his personal life, Dunsany had many close friends and supporters. He married Lady Beatrice Child Villiers in 1904, and they had one son named Randal.

He was friends with Rudyard Kipling and knew famous poets like W. B. Yeats. He even supported the Abbey Theatre as a major donor to help Irish literature thrive.

Even after he died, Dunsany's influence continued to grow. He passed away in Dublin in 1957 at the age of 79. He had become ill with appendicitis while visiting Ireland.
