The longfin mako is a large shark found in warm ocean waters.

It is a member of the mackerel shark family. This shark has a slim, torpedo-shaped body. It also has very long and broad pectoral fins. These fins are much longer than its head. Scientists think these large fins make it a slower swimmer. This is different from its relative, the shortfin mako. The shortfin mako is much more active and fast.

This shark has a very interesting way of growing. It uses a process called aplacental viviparity. This means the babies hatch from eggs inside the mother's uterus. Once the embryos hatch, they need more food to grow. The mother provides this through oophagy. This is when the young eat unfertilized eggs produced by the mother. Most mothers have a litter of only two pups. However, one mother near Puerto Rico had eight pups in 1983.

We have known about this shark for many years. A Cuban scientist named Darío Guitart-Manday first described it in 1966. He studied three adult sharks from the Caribbean Sea. The shark's scientific name is Isurus paucus. The word "paucus" is Latin for "few." This name refers to how rare the shark is. It is much harder to find than the shortfin mako.

Longfin mako sharks live in many parts of the world. They stay in tropical and warm-temperate oceans. They can be found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In the Atlantic, they live near the United States and Brazil. They also live near the Iberian Peninsula and Ghana. In the Pacific, they are found near Japan and Taiwan. They stay in deep water during the day. At night, they swim closer to the surface.

Today, the longfin mako faces many hard jobs. It is listed as an endangered species by the IUCN. This means the shark is at risk of disappearing. One reason is that they are often caught by mistake. This is called bycatch when they are caught in fishing nets. They are often caught on longlines meant for tuna. Because they have few babies, it is hard for their numbers to grow.
