It lives in very cold northern lands. These birds breed in the tundra and taiga regions. They spend their winters along the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

This duck is very special in its group. It is the only member of its genus, which is called Clangula. This name comes from a Latin word that means "to resound." The name hyemalis means "of winter."

These ducks have a very interesting way of finding food. They are gregarious, which means they like to live in large flocks. To eat, they dive into the water for mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish.

Most ducks stay near the surface, but these ducks can go much deeper. They use their wings to help them dive down. This special way of moving lets them reach depths of 20 meters. Some guides say they can even reach 30 meters deep.

People have studied these ducks for a long time. A Swedish naturalist named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758.

He originally placed them in a group called Anas. Later, in 1819, a zoologist named William Leach created the genus Clangula. He did this in an appendix about a voyage to find the Northwest Passage. In 2000, the American Ornithologists' Union changed their common name. They chose "long-tailed duck" to avoid a name that might be offensive to Native American tribes.

There are many places where you can find these birds. They breed in places like Alaska, Canada, Russia, and Norway.

In the winter, they move to large bodies of seawater. They can be found in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans. They also visit places like Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes. The Baltic Sea is a very important winter home. About 4.5 million ducks gather there during the winter months.

If you look closely, males and females look very different.

Males have a long, pointed tail and a dark grey bill. A pink band crosses their bill. In summer, the male has a dark head and neck. Females have brown backs and shorter tails. They build nests on the ground using plants and soft down.

Today, the long-tailed duck is considered vulnerable. This means their numbers are at risk, partly because they can get caught in fishing nets.
