She writes books for children and young adults. Many of her stories deal with hard topics. These might include racism or grief. She also writes about dystopias. A dystopia is a story about a scary or unfair world.

Lowry was born in Hawaii in 1937. Her father was a dentist in the U.S. Army. His job moved the family to many places. They lived in New York and even in Japan. Lowry loved to read from a young age. She even skipped a grade in school. She always dreamed of being a writer.

She has won many big awards. She won two Newbery Medals. One was for her book *Number the Stars*. The other was for *The Giver*. This book tells a story about a boy named Jonas. *The Giver* has sold over 12 million copies. Some schools use it in class. Other schools have tried to ban it. This means they tried to stop it from being in libraries. Lowry feels sad when this happens. She thinks books help our imagination grow.
