She was an artist before she was a writer. She worked as a painter and an illustrator. This work helped her family after her father died. As a teen, Andrews had a bad fall. She hurt her back very badly. This caused arthritis, which is a painful joint disease. She often used a wheelchair or crutches.

In 1979, she published a book called Flowers in the Attic. It tells the story of four children. They are kept in an attic by their mother. This book was a huge success. It reached the top of bestseller lists very fast. Her stories were often fast to read. People loved her tales of family secrets. By 1982, she had sold 11 million books. Her stories were translated into many languages. This includes Spanish, French, and Japanese.

Andrews died of breast cancer in 1986. After she died, her estate hired a ghostwriter. A ghostwriter is a person who writes for someone else. This writer, Andrew Neiderman, finished some of her books. He also made new series using her name. People still read these books today.
