A lobster trap is a tool used for fishing.

It catches lobsters or crayfish in the sea. These traps can be made of many things. Some use wood and wire. Others use metal and netting. Some are even made of hard plastic.

To catch a lobster, a person puts bait inside. Bait is often fish or chum. The trap is dropped to the sea floor.

A long rope is tied to the trap. At the end of the rope is a buoy. A buoy is a float that stays on top of the water. It helps the fisher find the trap later.

Traps have a special way of working. They have an opening that leads to a tunnel. This is a one-way entrance. A lobster can crawl in to find the food. Some traps have two parts. One part is the chamber, or the kitchen. This is where the bait sits. The lobster then moves to the parlor. This part stops the lobster from escaping.

Ebenezer Thorndike invented the trap in 1808. He lived in Massachusetts. Fishers check the traps every other day. They add more bait if they need to.
