Living fossil

Some living things look like ancient relatives from the fossil record. People often call these creatures "living fossils."

A living fossil belongs to a group that stays recognizable for a very long time. These groups usually have very few other living relatives today. They show very little change in their body shapes over millions of years. This process of staying the same is called stasis.

Scientists use this term to describe how their physical forms remain steady. It is a way to study how life persists through deep time.

How does a living fossil stay so similar to its ancestors? It happens through a process called stabilizing selection. This is an evolutionary way that keeps a body shape steady. Instead of changing into new forms, the species stays much the same.

This does not mean they stop evolving entirely. Their DNA, or their internal code, still changes over time. This is called genetic drift. Because of these tiny changes, a living fossil is not the exact same species as its ancient ancestors. They could not breed with their distant relatives.

Many people wonder where this idea came from. The famous scientist Charles Darwin used the term in 1859. He wrote about this in his book, "On the Origin of Species."

Darwin looked at animals like the platypus and the lungfish. He noticed they seemed to connect different groups of animals. He thought they lived in fresh water where competition was less severe. This helped them endure for a very long time. Today, many scientists avoid using the term because it can be confusing.

There are many amazing examples of these survivors in nature. The coelacanth is a very famous fish.

Its fossils are 80 million years old from the Cretaceous period. People found living coelacanths in 1938. This made them a "Lazarus taxon," which means they seemed to reappear. Another example is the ginkgo tree, known as Ginkgo biloba.

There are also glypheoid lobsters and many types of soft sea urchins. These creatures have survived through massive stretches of history.

You can think of a living fossil like a classic design. Imagine a tool that works so well it never needs to change. Even if the materials inside change slightly, the shape stays the same.

The nurse shark is another great example of long life. It has existed for more than 112 million years. This makes it one of the oldest vertebrate species alive today. These animals show us how life can find a successful way to exist. They remind us that some things in nature are built to last.
