The nation has a population of approximately 2.9 million people. Its capital and largest city is Vilnius. Other significant urban centers include Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, and Panevėžys. The titular nation consists of the ethnolinguistic group known as Balts. They speak the Lithuanian language.

The origins of the name Lithuania remain a subject of scholarly debate. The earliest written record appears in the year 1009.

This entry is found in the Annals of Quedlinburg. It uses the Latinized form, Litua. One theory suggests the name comes from Lietava. This is a small stream near Kernavė. Kernavė served as a core area for the early state. Some scholars find this unlikely because the stream is so small. Another hypothesis links the name to the leičiai. These were a distinct warrior social group in the 13th century. They were subordinate to the Lithuanian ruler or the state. The term leičiai was used as an ethnonym for Lithuanians in historical sources.

Human settlement in the region dates back about 10,000 years. Early inhabitants arrived after the Last Glacial Period. They belonged to the Kunda, Neman, and Narva cultures. These people were traveling hunters. As the climate warmed in the 8th millennium BC, forests developed. The population shifted toward local hunting and gathering. They also engaged in fresh-water fishing. Eventually, Indo-Europeans arrived during the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. They mixed with local populations to form various Baltic tribes. These tribes maintained trade via the Amber Road.

Political unity began in the 1230s under the leader Mindaugas. He united many Baltic tribes to face external threats. On 6 July 1253, he was crowned the Catholic King of Lithuania.

It reached an area of approximately 650,000 km2. In 1386, the realm entered a personal union with the Kingdom of Poland. This relationship evolved into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569. This union created one of the most prosperous states in Europe.

The Commonwealth faced decline in the late 18th century. Neighboring countries dismantled the state through three partitions. Between 1772 and 1795, the territory was lost. The Russian Empire annexed most of the Lithuanian lands.

During the 19th century, the Russian authorities implemented Russification policies. They introduced the Russian language to government institutions. They even placed a ban on the Lithuanian press. Lithuanians resisted through secret publishing and homeschooling. This period of resistance helped lay the foundation for a national revival. After World War I, Lithuania successfully declared independence in 1918.
