He has also served as a television personality, most notably as a judge on the singing competition *American Idol* since its sixteenth season in 2018.

Richie's musical foundation began during his time as a student at the Tuskegee Institute. He was a member of the Marching Crimson Pipers, the school's marching band. Although he studied economics and accounting, he chose to pursue a musical career. Interestingly, he began his professional journey without knowing how to read or write formal musical notation. In 1968, he joined the Motown group known as the Commodores. He initially served as both a singer and a saxophonist for the ensemble. The group first gained attention with a funky, danceable sound in tracks like "Machine Gun" and "Brick House."

As his career progressed, Richie transitioned from performing group songs to writing romantic ballads. He achieved his first major success as a songwriter in 1974 with "Happy People." While originally intended for the Commodores, the song became a number one R&B hit for The Temptations. By the late 1970s, Richie was frequently commissioned to write songs for other major artists. In 1980, he wrote and produced the number one single "Lady" for Kenny Rogers. In 1981, he recorded the massive hit "Endless Love" as a duet with Diana Ross. This single remains one of the top 20 bestselling singles of all time.

In 1982, Richie officially launched his solo career with his self-titled debut album, *Lionel Richie*. This album sold over four million copies and included the hit "Truly." He followed this in 1983 with the album *Can't Slow Down*, which reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. This second album was a global phenomenon, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. It featured the number one singles "All Night Long (All Night)" and "Hello." The success of this era propelled Richie into the ranks of international superstars.

This song, performed by USA for Africa, sold more than 20 million copies. His ability to write for film also brought him significant acclaim. His song "Say You, Say Me," written for the film *White Nights*, won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

These achievements highlight his ability to connect with audiences through both personal melodies and large-scale collaborative projects.

Over the decades, Richie has maintained a steady presence in the music industry. After a recording break between 1986 and 1996, he released several more studio albums, such as *Louder Than Words* and *Tuskegee*. His 2012 album, *Tuskegee*, featured his hits performed as duets with country music stars. This album returned him to the top of the Billboard 200 chart and achieved platinum status within six weeks. He has also performed for massive crowds, including an audience of up to 120,000 people at the Glastonbury Festival in England. In 2023, he was invited to perform at Windsor Castle for the Coronation Concert of Charles III and Camilla.

His contributions to music have earned him numerous prestigious honors and awards. He has won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for *Can't Slow Down*. In 2022, he reached several major milestones, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame. He also received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress. These accolades recognize his lasting impact on the landscape of popular music and his skill as a songwriter. Richie continues to share his life and legacy, including through his 2025 memoir, *Truly*.
