He was born in Helsinki, Finland, on December 28, 1969. His parents were both journalists. He grew up in a family that spoke Swedish. Linus loved computers from a very young age. At age 11, he started using a VIC-20 computer. He learned to write code using a language called BASIC. He even made his own games, like a Pac-Man clone called Cool Man.

In 1991, Linus began a project that would change the world. He created the Linux kernel. A kernel is the most important part of an operating system. It acts like a bridge between the computer hardware and the software. Linus first shared his work on an FTP server at his university. He wanted to make a system that was free for everyone to use. Because of this, he used the GNU General Public License. This license allows people to see and change the code. Many people from all over the world began helping him. This way of working is called open source.

Linus studied at the University of Helsinki for many years. He earned a master's degree in computer science there. During his studies, he also served in the Finnish Navy. He was an artillery observer and reached the rank of second lieutenant. In 1991, he bought an IBM PC clone to work on his code. This computer helped him build the first versions of Linux. He released version 1.0 of the kernel in March 1994. Later, he moved to California to work for a company called Transmeta. Eventually, he moved to Oregon to be near the Linux Foundation.

Linus has received many important awards for his hard work. In 2012, he won the Millennium Technology Prize. This prize recognized his work on the Linux kernel. He also won the IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award in 2014. In 2018, he received the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award.

In 1999, a magazine named him one of the top 100 innovators. His work became very valuable to big companies like Red Hat. He also created a tool called Git in 2005. Git is a system that helps many people track changes in their code.

Today, Linus still helps manage the Linux kernel. He decides which new pieces of code get added to the system. He also uses his skills for other hobbies. He loves scuba diving in the ocean. He even wrote a program called Subsurface to help plan his dives. Linus is married to Tove Torvalds, who is a karate champion. They have three daughters together. He believes that making things for everyone to use is the right way to do software. His work helps keep the digital world running every single day.
