Linus Benedict Torvalds is a Finnish and American software engineer. He is most famous as the creator and lead developer of the Linux kernel. A kernel is the core part of an operating system. It manages the communication between a computer's hardware and its software. Since 1991, Torvalds has guided the development of this essential technology. His work has shaped how modern computers, servers, and many devices function.

Torvalds began his journey with computers at age 11 in 1981. He started by programming a VIC-20 computer using a language called BASIC. He later learned to use machine code to talk directly to the computer's CPU. He also modified a Sinclair QL computer and wrote his own tools for it. This early experience helped him understand how computers work at a very deep level. He eventually earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of Helsinki. During his studies, he also served as a second lieutenant in the Finnish Navy.

In 1991, Torvalds began working on the Linux kernel. He used an Intel 80386-based IBM PC clone to build his first prototypes. He initially wanted to name the system "Freax." However, his friend Ari Lemmke named the directory "linux" on the university's FTP server. This was the first time the code was shared on the Internet. Torvalds eventually adopted the GNU General Public License version 2. This license is a type of open source agreement. It allows anyone to see, change, and share the software. This open approach allowed thousands of developers to contribute to the project.

Managing such a massive project requires special tools. In 2005, Torvalds created Git, a distributed version control system. Version control is a way for many people to work on the same code without breaking it. Git helps developers track every change made to a project. This tool became widely used across the entire software industry. Torvalds also created other specialized tools. One is Sparse, which is a static analysis tool for kernel developers. Another is Subsurface, which is software used for planning scuba dives.

Torvalds has received many prestigious honors for his technical contributions. In 2012, he won the Millennium Technology Prize. This award recognized his creation of a new open source operating system. He also received the IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award in 2014. In 2018, he was given the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award.

In 1999, the MIT Technology Review named him one of the top 100 innovators under age 35. During that same year, his shares in companies like Red Hat and VA Linux briefly reached a value of about US$20 million.

While he is the creator, Torvalds does not write all the code himself. As of 2006, he had written approximately 2% of the Linux kernel. However, his role is more about authority and management. He acts as the final decision-maker for which code is merged into the standard kernel. He monitors the use of the Linux trademark through the Linux Mark Institute. This ensures the name is used correctly. He continues to work full-time on improving Linux through the Linux Foundation. This foundation supports his work to keep the kernel growing and stable.

Torvalds's career has also included personal growth and professional changes. He has been known for a blunt and sometimes difficult communication style on mailing lists. In 2018, he stepped away from the kernel for a time to seek help with his professional conduct. He apologized for past personal attacks, calling them unprofessional. He eventually returned to his work as a kernel maintainer. His life outside of coding includes a passion for scuba diving. He is married to Tove Torvalds, a six-time Finnish national karate champion. They have three daughters, and their birthdays are even used as special values in the Linux kernel's reboot system call.
