About 40 million people speak it. Many live in the Congo. Others live in places like France or the United States. It began near the Congo River. Long ago, people used a language called Bobangi to trade. Later, a new version grew from it. In 1884, people called it "Bangala." Later, missionaries gave it the name Lingala.

Lingala has many different styles. Some people use "Literary Lingala" for news or school. Other people use "Spoken Lingala" in daily life. Most songs use the spoken style. This style is used in popular soukous music. The language also takes words from other tongues. For example, "míliki" sounds like the English word for milk.

Lingala uses tones to change meanings. A high tone or a low tone can change a word. For instance, "mutu" means human, but "mutú" means head. The language also uses prefixes. These are small parts added to the start of words. These parts help group words into different classes.
