Linear settlement

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A linear settlement is a group of buildings. They form in a long line.

These places are usually small or medium in size. They do not always have a central point. Instead, they stretch out in one direction. This shape is very different from a nucleated settlement. A nucleated settlement is a group of buildings clustered around a center.

Many settlements follow a specific path. They grow along a transport route. This might be a road, a river, or a canal.

There are many ways these lines form. Sometimes a physical feature creates the shape. A coastline can force buildings into a line. Mountains, hills, or valleys can do this too. Often, the route comes before the buildings. A road or river exists first. Then, the settlement grows along that path. In many cases, it is just one street. You will see houses on both sides of the road. This is called a street village.

As time goes on, these places can change. New parts may grow away from the main street. These can be side turnings or new districts. Southport in England is an example of this. It grew this way over time. This is not the same as ribbon development. Ribbon development is when an existing town spreads outward. It follows a main street to get bigger. These changes help the settlement expand.

Some linear settlements are very famous for their shape. Sułoszowa in Poland is a great example. It has one single main street. That street is 9 km long. About 3,500 people live in this village. The land there has thin strips of farmland.

Other places like Champlain in Quebec show this pattern. They sit along the Saint Lawrence River. These examples help us see how lines work in real life.

People also try to plan entire cities in lines. Many designers have proposed linear city projects. Arturo Soria y Mata had a plan for one. Michael Graves and Peter Eisenman also made plans. Madrid has a district called Ciudad Lineal. There is even a project called The Line in Saudi Arabia. Some people criticize these big designs. They say the plans can be too simple. They worry about how people live and grow. Critics say these cities might be hard to use.
