Limnognathia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Limnognathia is a tiny animal that lives in fresh water. It is part of a group called Micrognathozoa. This name means "small-jawed animal." These creatures are very small and hard to see. They are important for scientists to study. They help us learn about how animals evolved.

This animal has a very special way of eating. It has complex jaws with fifteen separate parts. These parts are tiny, from 4 to 14 micrometers. The animal can push its jaws outside its mouth to eat. It also uses its jaws to push out food it cannot digest. It mostly eats bacteria, diatoms, and blue-green algae.

Scientists first found these animals in 1994. They were discovered on Disko Island in Greenland. Since then, people have found them in many places. They live in the British Isles and the Spanish Pyrenees. They have also been found on the Crozet Islands in Antarctica. This shows they live all over the world.

Limnognathia has many tiny hairs called cilia. Some cilia are on the forehead in a horseshoe shape. These hairs create a current to move food toward the mouth. Other cilia are on the sides and the underside. These help the animal move through the water. The animal also has a large ganglion, which is a brain.

These animals have a curious way of growing. Most specimens have female organs. Some young ones might have male organs at first. This may be a process called sequential hermaphroditism. They lay two kinds of eggs. Thin-walled eggs hatch very quickly. Thick-walled eggs can survive freezing during the winter. They hatch when spring arrives.
