Limnognathia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Limnognathia is a tiny animal that lives in fresh water. People first found it on Disko Island in Greenland. Since then, people found it in many places. It lives in Antarctica and the British Isles. It even lives in the Spanish Pyrenees. This means it lives all over the world.

This animal has small jaws. We call these jaws part of the phylum Micrognathozoa. This name means "small-jawed animal." The jaws have fifteen tiny parts. They can move outside the mouth to eat. They also move out to clear away food that cannot be eaten.

Limnognathia has many tiny hairs called cilia. Some cilia are on its forehead. These hairs make a current to move food to the mouth. Other cilia help the animal move around.

These animals lay two kinds of eggs. Some eggs have thin walls. They hatch very fast. Other eggs have thick walls. These thick walls help them stay safe from freezing. They can wait through winter and hatch in the spring. Most Limnognathia have female organs. Some young ones may start as males. They might change into females later.
