Lima Barreto was a famous Brazilian novelist and journalist.

He was a major figure in a movement called Brazilian Pre-Modernism. Barreto used his writing to look closely at his country. He often used satire to point out problems in society. Satire is a way of using humor or exaggeration to criticize people. He mostly targeted the government and military leaders. He also wanted to show the truth about how people lived. His work helped people think about the world around them.

Barreto had a very specific way of writing his books.

Many writers of his time used a very fancy and difficult style. They thought this made them look smart or high in status. Barreto chose to do the opposite. He used a simple and clear style instead. He wanted his stories to be easy for most Brazilian people to read. This choice made some wealthy people angry. They criticized him because his writing was not classical or fancy.

His life began in the Laranjeiras neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

He was born on May 13, 1881. That day was a Friday the 13th. While some think that is unlucky, Barreto thought it brought good luck. His father, João Henriques de Lima Barreto, worked as a typographer. Barreto studied at several schools, including the Colégio Pedro II. He had to leave his college studies in 1904. He did this to help take care of his brothers. This happened because his father's mental health was getting worse.

Barreto wrote many important books and stories.

His most famous book is Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma. It was first published in 1911 and tells of a patriot named Policarpo. Policarpo wanted to make Brazil a powerful nation. He even tried to make Tupi, a Native American language, the official language. Another famous work is Os Bruzundangas. This is a collection of tales about an imaginary country. He used this fake country to represent real problems in Brazil. He also wrote the novel Clara dos Anjos, which was published after he died.

Barreto's work connects to the history of Brazil in many ways.

His birth year was near the time the Golden Law abolished slavery. His stories often explore the feelings and thoughts of his characters. He showed how some people could be selfish or unkind to others. He also wrote about the hard lives of poor people. Sadly, Barreto struggled with depression during his later years. He died from a heart attack in 1922. Today, people still study his books to understand Brazilian history.
