License

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A license is a special kind of permission. It is an official permit to do, use, or own something.

You can think of it as a promise. The person giving the license promises not to sue the person using it. This is important because many activities are usually against the rules. For example, driving a car on a public road is not allowed without a permit. A government can give you a license if you prove you can do the job. You might also have to pay a fee to get one.

This helps authorities keep track of what people are doing.

Sometimes, people or companies make their own licenses. These are often written as a contract or a specific agreement. In these deals, one person is called the licensor. The person receiving the permission is called the licensee. A license can have very specific rules about how it is used. One rule might be the term, which is how long the license lasts. Another rule is the territory, which is the place where it works. A license might only be valid in North America. If you used it in Kyrgyzstan, you might not be protected.

Licenses are very important for ideas called intellectual property. This includes things like software, inventions, and art.

When a person creates a new invention, they get a patent. A patent owner can give a license to let others make or sell that product. This is often called a patent license agreement. Some licenses are exclusive, meaning only one person can use them. Other licenses are non-exclusive, so many people can use them at once. To use these ideas, people often pay royalty payments. They might pay a lump sum all at once. They might also pay a running royalty over a long time.

There are also many licenses for art and brands. An artist can give a license to use a character like Mickey Mouse. This means the person using the character will not get in trouble for copying it. Businesses also use licenses for famous names and logos. For example, McDonald's licenses its "Golden Arches" to people who run restaurants. These people must follow strict quality standards to keep the license. If they do not follow the rules, the company can take the license back. Even software uses this method through end-user license agreements. When you install software, you are often agreeing to a license.

Finally, licenses can be used in schools or for land. In some countries, a licentiate is an academic degree. In France, a licence is the first degree a student earns at a university. In places like Sweden and Finland, it is a degree between a master's and a doctorate. A license can also give someone permission to act on another person's land. This is different from a lease because it is often easier to cancel. A license can even end if the person who owns it passes away. Whether it is for a car, a song, or a degree, licenses help people follow rules.
