Levon Ter-Petrosyan is a prominent Armenian politician and historian. He served as the first president of Armenia from 1991 until 1998. Before his political career, he was a dedicated academic. He worked as a senior researcher at the Matenadaran institute. This institution is a famous research center named after Saint Mesrop Mashtots. Ter-Petrosyan specialized in ancient languages and history. He wrote a doctoral dissertation on the Assyrian language. His academic work focused on its ties to the Armenian language. He has authored more than 30 books and 80 scientific articles.

Ter-Petrosyan was born on January 9, 1945, in Aleppo, Syria. His family had a long history of serving as priests. They lived near Musa Dagh in the Hatay region. His family participated in armed resistance during the Armenian genocide. They later fled to Syria before moving to Soviet Armenia in 1947. His father, Hakob Ter-Petrosyan, was a founding member of the Syrian Communist Party. Levon completed his studies at Yerevan State University in 1969. He later earned a doctoral degree from Leningrad State University in 1987.

In the late 1980s, the Karabakh movement began in Soviet Armenia. This movement sought to unite Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. On May 19, 1988, Ter-Petrosyan helped found the Karabakh Committee. He became the de facto leader of this group. The movement eventually expanded to include goals for democratization. In 1989, he helped establish the Pan-Armenian National Movement, or ANM. This was the first non-communist party to take power in a Soviet republic. In 1990, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Armenia.

Armenia officially declared its intention to be independent in August 1990. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Armenia declared full independence in September 1991. Ter-Petrosyan won the first presidential election in October 1991. He received 83% of the total vote.

During his presidency, he managed the country's entry into the Commonwealth of Independent States. He also oversaw the formal creation of the Armenian Armed Forces in 1992. This was done through a historical decree regarding the Ministry of Defense.

His presidency was defined by the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. This conflict was fought against neighboring Azerbaijan. Armenian forces achieved several military successes during this period. They captured the city of Shusha in May 1992. They also captured Lachin, which connects Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh. In 1993, Armenian forces captured the city of Kelbajar. This event drew significant international attention. Turkey responded by closing its border with Armenia. The war eventually led to a ceasefire agreement in May 1994.

Political disagreements eventually led to Ter-Petrosyan's departure from office. He was reelected in 1996, but the election faced accusations of fraud. This caused mass protests led by Vazgen Manukyan. Later, he disagreed with his own government leaders. He clashed with Defense Minister Vazgen Sargsyan and Prime Minister Robert Kocharyan. These leaders disagreed with his peace proposals for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Consequently, Ter-Petrosyan resigned from the presidency on February 3, 1998. He remained inactive in politics until 2007.

Ter-Petrosyan made a political comeback during the 2008 presidential election. He ran against the then-Prime Minister, Serzh Sargsyan. Official results showed Ter-Petrosyan earned 21.5% of the vote. He claimed the election was rigged and organized mass protests. These protests ended in violence on March 1, 2008. Government forces used police and military power to disperse the crowds. This event resulted in the deaths of ten people.

Following this, he founded the Armenian National Congress, or ANC.

The ANC became a major opposition group in Armenia. It included more than a dozen political parties and organizations. In 2011, the ANC organized rallies that led to political concessions. In the 2012 parliamentary elections, the ANC won 7.1% of the vote. This gave the party 7 seats in the parliament. However, the party lost these seats in later elections. Ter-Petrosyan continued to lead the party's electoral lists through 2021. His career shows the complex link between academic study and national leadership.
