Defining the exact borders of the Levant can be tricky. In archaeology, the area includes Cyprus and the land near the Mediterranean. The northern edge begins at the Plain of 'Amuq or the Taurus Mountains. To the south, it reaches the Wadi al-Arish in the Sinai. The western side is the Mediterranean Sea itself. The eastern side is marked by deserts and the Euphrates River.

The name Levant has a very bright meaning. It comes from an Italian word that means "rising." This refers to the sun rising in the east. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Italian traders used the name. They used it to describe lands east of Venice. This included places like Greece, Anatolia, and Egypt. The name entered the English language in the 15th century.

History has brought many groups to this land. In 1581, England formed the Levant Company to trade with the Ottoman Empire. Later, the name "Levant States" was used for Syria and Lebanon. Today, many people live in this region. These groups include Arabs, Jews, Kurds, and Maronites. You might also find Assyrians, Armenians, Chechens, and Circassians there. The modern population near these borders is about 57.6 million people.

Many people use the word "Levantine" to describe the culture. This includes the food and the way people live. Scientists and archaeologists use the term to be fair and neutral. It helps them study the history without picking sides in politics. It describes a shared tapestry of many different peoples.
