She was famous for writing beautiful poems and plays. People remember her because she also fought for the rights of women and her country. Her name, Ukrainka, actually means "Ukrainian woman" in the Ukrainian language. She lived during a time when many things were changing in her land. She used her writing to show her love for Ukrainian culture. Her work helped many people feel proud of who they were.

Growing up, Lesya learned many important skills at home. Her mother, Olena Pchilka, was also a writer and a leader for women. To keep their culture strong, the family spoke only Ukrainian at home. They even hired special teachers to help the children learn. Lesya learned to read when she was only four years old. She was very good at languages and knew ten different ones. These included English, German, French, Italian, Greek, Latin, Polish, Russian, and Bulgarian. She also knew her native Ukrainian very well.

Lesya began writing very early in her life. When she was eight, she wrote her first poem called "Hope." This poem was about her aunt being taken away for her political beliefs. At age thirteen, she published her first poem, "Lily of the Valley," in a magazine. Because the government had rules against Ukrainian books, she used a pen name. Her mother suggested the name Lesya Ukrainka to protect her. Her first book of poems had to be printed in secret. It was then smuggled into the city of Kyiv to be read.

As she grew older, Lesya became a very successful writer. She wrote many famous works like the play "Forest Song" in 1911. She also wrote "Princess" in 1913 and the poem "Ancient Fairy Tale" in 1893. In 1888, she and her brother started a group called Pleyada. This group helped translate famous stories into the Ukrainian language. Lesya also traveled to many places like Italy, Egypt, and Bulgaria. She did this because she had a sickness called tuberculosis. This illness made her bones and lungs very weak. She traveled to find warmer, dry air to help her feel better.

Even when she was very sick, Lesya never stopped her work. She wrote many poems about her feelings and her life. In 1897, she met a man named Merzhynsky and they fell in love. She wrote many special poems for him that were not published while she lived. After he died in 1901, she wrote a whole poem in just one night. She eventually married Klyment Kvitka and moved to places like Georgia. Lesya died in August 1913 in a village called Surami.
