Leptin tells your brain how much energy you have stored. When leptin levels are high, your brain knows you have enough energy. This helps you feel full. It can even make it easier to resist junk food. If leptin levels are low, your brain thinks you are starving. This makes you feel very hungry so you will look for food.

Leptin works in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This part helps control hunger and satiety. Satiety is the feeling of being full. Leptin also helps with other important things. It helps the brain with learning and memory. It also helps with growing and staying healthy during puberty. In some cases, leptin helps the immune system. The immune system is how your body fights germs.
