Leptin is a very important hormone in the body. A hormone is a messenger that travels through your system.

Most leptin is made by cells in your fat tissue. This hormone helps your body keep a long-term balance of energy. It tells your brain how much energy you have stored in your body. When leptin levels are high, your brain knows you have plenty of energy.

This can even make it easier to resist foods that have many calories.

Leptin works by sending signals to a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This area is part of your central nervous system.

Inside the hypothalamus, leptin does two main jobs to manage hunger. First, it acts on the lateral hypothalamus to stop hunger signals. It does this by fighting against a hunger promoter called neuropeptide Y. Second, it acts on the medial hypothalamus to create a feeling of satiety. Satiety is the feeling of being full after eating. This process helps your body manage how much food you want to eat.

Scientists have learned a lot about how this works through different studies. They have looked at how the LEP gene codes for leptin. They also studied how leptin receptors work on different cell membranes.

In some animal models, researchers found that leptin can help with brain health. For example, giving leptin to mice with Alzheimer's disease helped improve their memory. Scientists also found that leptin can help mice with type 1 diabetes. These mice had more stable blood sugar and less body fat.

There are many specific facts about how leptin moves through the body. Leptin levels change more when you eat less food than when you eat more.

If a person is starving, their leptin levels will drop very low. This tells the brain to look for food. In some cases, such as obesity, the body might lose its sensitivity to leptin. This means the brain cannot detect the feeling of being full even when energy stores are high. Leptin also plays a role in many other places, like the placenta during pregnancy.

Leptin connects to many things you might already know about health. It helps control the start of puberty in the body. It also plays a part in how the immune system works to protect you.

Even sleep can change your leptin levels. If you do not get enough sleep, your leptin levels might go down. This shows how many different parts of your life affect this one messenger. From eating and sleeping to growing up, leptin is busy at work.
