Szilard's most famous idea was the nuclear chain reaction. In 1933, he read a speech by Lord Rutherford. Rutherford believed using atomic energy for practical purposes was not feasible. This dismissal annoyed Szilard. On that same day, he conceived of a self-sustaining process. He realized that if a nuclear reaction produced neutrons, those neutrons could initiate more reactions. This would create a continuous chain of energy production. He patented this concept in 1936. 
This discovery led to massive scientific projects. In 1938, Szilard moved to the United States. He worked with Enrico Fermi and Walter Zinn to create a real chain reaction. On December 2, 1942, they achieved this within the Chicago Pile-1. Szilard served as the chief physicist at the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. He worked on nuclear reactor design and helped with the Manhattan Project. Later, he and Fermi applied for a nuclear reactor patent in 1944.
Szilard was also a prolific inventor of scientific tools. In 1928, he submitted the earliest patent for the electron microscope. He also contributed to the development of the linear accelerator in 1928. In 1929, he applied for a patent for the cyclotron. Between 1926 and 1930, he worked with Albert Einstein on the Einstein refrigerator. This device was notable because it had no moving parts. While many others received credit or Nobel Prizes for these tools, Szilard's foundational ideas were essential.
His academic journey began in Budapest, Hungary. He was born Leó Spitz on February 11, 1898. His family changed their surname to Szilard, meaning "solid" in Hungarian, in 1900. He studied engineering at Palatine Joseph Technical University. However, his studies were interrupted by service in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. He later moved to Berlin to study physics at Friedrich Wilhelm University. There, he attended lectures by famous scientists like Albert Einstein and Max Planck. 
Szilard's brilliance extended into the study of information and biology. In his doctoral thesis, he tackled a puzzle called Maxwell's demon. This was a problem in the philosophy of thermal and statistical physics. Szilard was the first to recognize the connection between thermodynamics and information theory. He also made discoveries in biology, such as feedback inhibition. He even gave advice that helped make the first cloning of a human cell a reality. He helped found the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. 
Beyond science, Szilard was deeply concerned with world safety. After Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933, Szilard urged his friends to flee Europe. He moved to England and helped found the Academic Assistance Council. This organization helped over 2,500 refugee scholars find new jobs. Later, he advocated for the responsible use of nuclear energy. He drafted the Szilard petition to President Harry S. Truman. He wanted a non-lethal demonstration of the atomic bomb instead of a strike on civilians. 
In his later years, Szilard continued to fight for peace. He founded the Council for a Livable World in 1962. This group aimed to provide reason regarding nuclear weapons to the American public. He even used his own scientific designs to treat his bladder cancer with cobalt-60. Szilard died of a heart attack in his sleep in 1964. His life was a series of connections between tiny particles and the survival of humanity.
