During World War II, his work took on a heavy, practical focus. 
At the peak of his influence in the 1950s, von Neumann was a leading expert on nuclear weaponry. He worked with many organizations, such as the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory. He was known for his ability to chair complex committees that connected military needs with scientific research. This work created a blueprint for future long-range missile programs. His intellectual capacity drew praise from colleagues across many different scientific disciplines.
Despite his serious work, von Neumann had a vibrant personal life. He was known to play loud German march music and enjoyed sharp, earthy humor. He was a social man who could attend parties until early morning and still deliver academic lectures at 8:30. In 1955, he was diagnosed with cancer, which may have been caused by radiation exposure at Los Alamos. He died on February 8, 1957. His legacy lives on through his mathematical theories and a crater on the Moon named in his honor.
