History shows that Leo Minor was not always recognized as its own entity. Classical astronomers like Aratus and Ptolemy did not see a distinct pattern in this region. Ptolemy even classified these stars as amorphōtoi, meaning they did not belong to a specific outline. They were simply considered part of the constellation Leo. It was not until 1687 that Johannes Hevelius officially designated Leo Minor. He included it in his star atlas, the Firmamentum Sobiescianum, and listed 18 of its objects in his catalog. He chose the name to align with the "beastly" neighbors, the Lion and the Great Bear.
Different cultures have viewed these stars through various lenses. In Chinese astronomy, certain stars in this region formed part of Neiping, known as a "Court of Judge or Mediator." Other stars were seen as part of a large celestial dragon. On a 13th-century Arabic celestial globe, the stars were termed "Gazelle with her Young." Another interpretation described them as "the Pond" into which the gazelle jumps. In 1870, the astronomer Richard A. Proctor suggested the name "Leaena," or "the Lioness," to make constellation names easier to manage on charts.
Beyond individual stars, Leo Minor contains incredible deep-sky objects. It includes two stars with known planetary systems, such as HD 87883, which has a planet orbiting every 7.9 years. The constellation also hosts interacting galaxies, such as the pair Arp 107, which is 450 million light-years away.
