History shows that people have looked at this area for a long time. Ancient astronomers like Ptolemy did not see a clear pattern here. He thought these stars did not belong to a specific shape. Johannes Hevelius changed this in 1687. He was the first to draw Leo Minor in his star atlas. He wanted the name to match its neighbors, the Lion and the Great Bear. This designation is a Greek letter used to name stars. Beta Leonis Minoris is actually a binary star system. This means it consists of two stars orbiting a common center of gravity every 38.62 years. The primary star is an orange giant with a spectral class of G9III. The secondary star is a yellow-white main sequence star of spectral type F8. The primary star is quite massive, with about double the mass of the Sun and 7.8 times its radius.

Other stars in the constellation offer diverse astronomical phenomena. The third-brightest star, 21 Leonis Minoris, is a white main-sequence star with an average magnitude of 4.5. It is a Delta Scuti variable, which means it is a pulsating star. This star rotates very rapidly, spinning on its axis in less than 12 hours. Because of this speed, the star is likely flattened in shape. Scientists use these types of pulsating stars as "standard candles" to measure distances in space. History shows that Leo Minor was not always recognized as its own entity. Classical astronomers like Aratus and Ptolemy did not see a distinct pattern in this region. Ptolemy even classified these stars as amorphōtoi, meaning they did not belong to a specific outline. They were simply considered part of the constellation Leo. It was not until 1687 that Johannes Hevelius officially designated Leo Minor. He included it in his star atlas, the Firmamentum Sobiescianum, and listed 18 of its objects in his catalog. He chose the name to align with the "beastly" neighbors, the Lion and the Great Bear.

Different cultures have viewed these stars through various lenses. In Chinese astronomy, certain stars in this region formed part of Neiping, known as a "Court of Judge or Mediator." Other stars were seen as part of a large celestial dragon. On a 13th-century Arabic celestial globe, the stars were termed "Gazelle with her Young." Another interpretation described them as "the Pond" into which the gazelle jumps. In 1870, the astronomer Richard A. Proctor suggested the name "Leaena," or "the Lioness," to make constellation names easier to manage on charts.

Beyond individual stars, Leo Minor contains incredible deep-sky objects. It includes two stars with known planetary systems, such as HD 87883, which has a planet orbiting every 7.9 years.
