Lech Kaczyński was a very important leader in Poland.

He served as the 4th president of Poland from 2005 to 2010. Before he was president, he worked in many different roles. He was the mayor of the capital city, Warsaw, from 2002 to 2005. He also worked as the Minister of Justice and the President of the Supreme Audit Office. His life was defined by his work for his country. He wanted to make Poland a fair and safe place for everyone.

His path to leadership began with a fight for freedom. During the time when communist rule was in place, Lech was an activist. He joined groups like the Workers' Defence Committee to help people. In 1980, he became an adviser to the Solidarity movement. This was a group that worked for democracy in Poland. Because of his work, he was even held in a place called internment. This happened after the government imposed martial law in December 1981. After he was released, he kept working with the underground Solidarity group.

Lech was also a very smart student and teacher. He was born in Warsaw to Rajmund and Jadwiga Kaczyński. He studied law and administration at Warsaw University. Later, he earned a Ph.D. from Gdańsk University in 1980. He even became a professor at two different universities. Interestingly, he was also an actor for a short time. In 1962, he starred in a film called "The Two Who Stole the Moon." He acted in this movie with his identical twin brother, Jarosław.

In 2005, Lech won a big election to become president.

He won by getting 54.04 percent of the votes. He defeated a man named Donald Tusk in the second round. In 2006, his brother Jarosław became the Prime Minister of Poland. This was a very rare event in history. They were the first pair of brothers to lead a country at the same time. They were also the only twin brothers to ever do this.

As president, Lech worked on many big goals for Poland. He wanted to build strong ties with the United States. He also wanted to work closely with neighbors like Ukraine and the Baltic states. He worked to fight crime and corruption in his country. Sadly, his life ended during a very difficult moment. On April 10, 2010, a Polish Air Force jet crashed in Smolensk, Russia.

Lech and his wife died in this accident. He was the first Polish president to die while in office since Gabriel Narutowicz.
