She was born in 1929 in a village called Sinne. At that time, the village was in Poland, but today it is in Ukraine. She grew up in a family that followed certain religious beliefs. When she was only ten years old, she began working as a maid. Later, she moved to Poland to start a new life. By 1950, she began working at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdańsk. She worked hard as a welder and later as a crane operator. Because she was so good at her job, she was named a Hero of Socialist Labor.

Anna was a person who cared deeply about what was fair.

She was a very religious Catholic woman. She believed that people should stand up against unfair treatment. In 1978, she joined a group called the Free Trade Unions of the Coast. She also helped run an underground news sheet called Robotnik Wybrzeża. This was a way to share news that the government did not want people to read. She was not afraid to challenge her bosses at the shipyard. Even though she worked hard, she became unhappy with how the country was run.

In August 1980, a big event changed everything for Poland.

The shipyard bosses fired Anna from her job on August 7. This was only five months before she planned to retire. The other workers were very angry about this decision. They started a strike on August 14 to demand her return to work. This small strike grew into a massive movement called Solidarity. It became the first independent trade union in the Eastern Bloc. By September, more than one million workers were on strike to support their demands.

Anna played a huge role in making the movement grow.

She and another woman named Alina Pienkowska helped keep the strike going. They closed the shipyard gates to make sure the workers stayed together. This helped turn a small strike into a huge wave of support across the coast. Because of this, the government signed the Gdańsk Agreement on August 31, 1980. This agreement allowed workers to form their own unions for the first time. Many people started to call Anna the "mother of independent Poland" because of her bravery.

Life was not always easy for Anna after the big strike.

She had many disagreements with other leaders like Lech Wałęsa. She felt the union was losing its focus on the regular workers. Because of her strong beliefs, she was arrested and spent 19 months in jail. In 2006, she received the Order of the White Eagle, which is Poland's highest honor. In 2020, Time magazine named her one of the 100 Women of the Year. Sadly, she died in a plane crash near Smolensk in 2010.
