Later, he earned a Ph.D. from Gdańsk University in 1980. He even became a professor at two different universities. Interestingly, he was also an actor for a short time. In 1962, he starred in a film called "The Two Who Stole the Moon." He acted in this movie with his identical twin brother, Jarosław.

In 2005, Lech won a big election to become president.

He won by getting 54.04 percent of the votes. He defeated a man named Donald Tusk in the second round. In 2006, his brother Jarosław became the Prime Minister of Poland. This was a very rare event in history. They were the first pair of brothers to lead a country at the same time. They were also the only twin brothers to ever do this.

As president, Lech worked on many big goals for Poland. He wanted to build strong ties with the United States. He also wanted to work closely with neighbors like Ukraine and the Baltic states. He worked to fight crime and corruption in his country. Sadly, his life ended during a very difficult moment. On April 10, 2010, a Polish Air Force jet crashed in Smolensk, Russia.

In August 1980, he advised the Inter-Enterprise Strike Committee at the Gdańsk Shipyard. He also worked with the Solidarity movement. When martial law was imposed in December 1981, he was interned as an "anti-socialist element." After his release, he continued his work within the underground Solidarity movement. He participated in the important Round Table Talks from February to April 1989.

Following the 1989 elections, Kaczyński entered national politics. He served as a senator and a vice-chairman of the Solidarity movement. In 1991, he was elected to the Sejm, which is the lower house of the Polish parliament. He supported Lech Wałęsa during Wałęsa's successful 1990 presidential campaign. Kaczyński also served as the Minister of Justice in the government of Jerzy Buzek. In 2001, he and his brother Jarosław co-founded the Law and Justice party. This party is often described by the media as conservative.

As mayor of Warsaw, Kaczyński focused on urban issues and history. He declared a war on corruption during his term. He supported the building of the Warsaw Uprising Museum. He also helped fund the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. In 2004, he appointed a panel to calculate losses from the Second World War. The panel estimated that 85% of Warsaw was destroyed during the uprising. They valued these losses at at least 45.3 billion euros.

Kaczyński won the presidency in the 2005 election. In the first round, he received 33.1% of the vote. He moved to a second round of voting against Donald Tusk. In that final round, Kaczyński won 54.04% of the vote, totaling 8,257,468 votes.

In 2006, his brother Jarosław became the Prime Minister. This made them the first pair of brothers to lead a country simultaneously. They were also the only twin brothers to achieve this feat.

His presidency involved complex domestic and foreign policies. He aimed to fight corruption and increase social solidarity. He also sought to protect the economy and support Polish families. In foreign affairs, he wanted to strengthen ties with the United States.

His life ended during a tragic aviation accident. On April 10, 2010, a Polish Air Force jet crashed while attempting to land.

The crash occurred at Smolensk North Airport in Russia. Kaczyński and his wife were among those who died in the disaster. They were traveling to attend ceremonies for the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. He was the first Polish president to die while in office since Gabriel Narutowicz.
