The League of Nations was a very important group of countries.

It was the first worldwide organization meant to keep world peace. Many leaders wanted to find a way to stop wars before they started. They believed that countries should talk through their problems instead of fighting. This group was a big change in how nations acted together. It was a way to build a more peaceful world for everyone.

To make peace, the League used a plan called a Covenant. This plan had several main goals for all the member nations. One goal was to use collective security to prevent wars. This means countries would work together to stop any one nation from being aggressive. They also wanted to reduce the number of weapons in the world. This process is called disarmament. The League also helped settle arguments through negotiation and arbitration.

History shows that many people worked hard to create this group. After the First World War ended, leaders met at the Paris Peace Conference. They signed the Covenant as part of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. The League officially began its work on January 10, 1920. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson was a leading architect of the League. He even won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on it. However, his own country, the United States, never actually joined the group.

The League faced many hard jobs during its 26 years of work. It did not have its own army to enforce its rules. It had to rely on powerful countries like Britain, France, Italy, and Japan. At its largest, the League had 58 member nations.

Some countries left the group in the 1930s, including Japan and Germany. The Soviet Union joined in 1934 but was expelled in 1939. Because it could not stop the Second World War, the League stopped working. It officially dissolved on April 18, 1946.

Even though it did not stop every war, the League did many good things. It helped improve working conditions and fought against child labor.

It also worked on global health and helped refugees. The League paved the way for the United Nations, which we have today.

It taught the world how to follow international laws. Many of the agencies we use now started with the League. It showed that even if a plan is not perfect, it can lead to better ways of living together.
