Laziness

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Laziness is when a person does not want to act. This happens even if they are able to do the work. People often use mean words for this. They might use names like "slacker" or "couch potato."

In 1931, a study looked at high school students. Many students said they failed because of laziness. However, teachers thought it was because students lacked ability.

Laziness can happen for many reasons. It might come from low self-esteem. It can also come from a lack of interest. Sometimes, it is caused by too many distractions. These distractions can change how the brain works. They can increase dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that brings pleasure. Too much of it can make it hard to value hard work.

Even animals show this behavior. Most animals eat until they are full. Then, they spend much of their time doing nothing. They do not try to find the perfect food. They just find enough to stay healthy. Some predators are very good at hunting. Because they are so fast, they have more free time. This can make them look lazy to others.
