Law school

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A law school is a specialized institution for legal education. These schools may be independent or part of a larger university. They are often called law centers, colleges of law, or faculties of law. The primary goal is to train people for legal careers. These careers include becoming a lawyer, a judge, or other legal professionals. This training happens within a specific jurisdiction, which is a defined area of legal authority.

The mechanism for obtaining a legal education varies by country. In some systems, students begin law studies at the undergraduate level. In others, it is a postgraduate process that requires a previous degree. For example, the United States uses a postgraduate system. Students in the United States typically complete a Juris Doctor (JD) degree after finishing college. This degree is a professional program designed to prepare students for the practice of law.

Different countries follow distinct stages and types of legal degrees. In Argentina, students pursue an undergraduate degree in law. This program usually lasts five to six years. After a university reform in 1918, the career was renamed "Attorney." In Brazil, legal education follows a five-year course. After this, students receive a bachelor's degree. They may then choose to specialize through a "lato sensu" path or an academic "stricto sensu" path. The latter includes a master's degree and a doctorate.

History shows how these institutions were established across the globe. Brazil established its first law schools in 1827 or 1828. These schools used the Coimbra Faculty of Law as an educational model.

In India, the structure of legal education changed significantly after 1987. The Advocates Act of 1961 now governs how degrees are granted and how the profession is regulated.

Specific numbers and requirements define the path to legal practice. In Indonesia, a law degree can take between four and seven years. Students can earn three tiers of degrees: the Sarjana Hukum (Bachelor of Law), the Magister Hukum (Master in Law), and the Doctor (Doctor in Law). In Australia, students must graduate with a specific degree like a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or a Juris Doctor (JD). They must also complete a 12-month internship or practical legal training.

These steps ensure professionals meet the standards of the Supreme Court.

There are many notable examples of how law schools operate. In Canada, some schools like McGill University offer a "transsystemic" program. This combines both civil law and common law studies.

Other Canadian universities offer joint programs with American schools. For instance, York University and New York University have a joint program. In Finland, students aim for a master's degree. To become a judge, they must complete a one-year externship in a district court. This earns them the title of varatuomari (VT).

Law school connects to broader legal and social systems. In India, the Bar Council of India acts as a supreme regulatory body. It ensures that institutions meet minimum curriculum standards.

In Brazil, the practice of law is tied to the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB). Candidates for public roles, such as judges or prosecutors, must pass entrance exams. They must also complete three years of legal experience. These requirements help maintain the standards of the entire legal system.
