Middle school is a specific stage of education. It acts as a bridge between primary school and secondary school. This level is known by many different names across the globe. Some regions call it junior high school or intermediate school. Others use terms like lower secondary school or senior public school. This stage is designed to support students as they transition into more advanced learning.

The way middle school works depends on the local education system. In many places, it is defined by specific grade levels and ages. For example, Afghanistan includes grades 6, 7, and 8 for students aged 11 to 14. Algeria uses a four-grade model for students between 11 and 15. In Brazil, the stage is called Ensino Fundamental II. It is a mandatory period covering grades 6 to 9 for ages 11 to 14. These structures help organize how young people move through their schooling.

Some countries do not have a separate middle school building or system. In Australia, most students move directly from primary to secondary school. However, some Australian schools use a middle school model for years 5 to 8. Other schools might classify years 7, 8, and 9 as junior high. In Canada, the structure varies significantly by province. In Ontario, many elementary schools serve students until grade 8. This means they do not have separate middle school buildings. In Quebec, there is no middle school section at all. Instead, students move from elementary school straight to a five-year secondary level.

Curriculums often become more specialized during these years. In Egypt, the preparatory stage introduces more complex subjects. Instead of general mathematics, students study algebra and geometry. They also study various branches of history, including pharaonic, Coptic, and Islamic history. In France, students attend a school called collège. This lasts four years for pupils aged 11 to 15. Students can earn a diploma by passing tests in subjects like physics, chemistry, and mathematics. This diploma helps them enter high school, known as lycée.

Testing and exams often determine what happens after middle school. In China, the junior high stage is the final part of nine years of compulsory education. To enter senior high school, students often take the Senior High School Entrance Exam. This is commonly called the "Middle Exam." Students may bypass this exam if they show distinctive talents. These talents might include athletics, leadership, or excellent coursework. In Iraq, students take the National Intermediate Baccalaureate Examination after grade 9. Passing this exam allows them to choose between general or vocational schools.

Middle school systems are widespread and vary in scale. Indonesia has approximately 22,000 middle schools, known as SMP. These schools are split between public and private ownership. In Cyprus, the equivalent stage is the gymnasium, which serves ages 12 to 15. In Greece, the gymnasium also covers grades 7, 8, and 9. These different systems all serve the same purpose of preparing students for higher levels. Whether through specialized subjects or national exams, this stage is a vital part of global education.
