A laser is a special tool that makes light. The word laser is an acronym. It stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.

This means the device makes light stronger through a special set of steps.

Inside a laser, there is a gain medium. This is a material like a gas or a solid. It can be a liquid or even a plasma.

To start, we must add power to this material. This is called pumping. We use light or electricity to do this.

When we pump the material, its atoms get excited. This means they move to a higher energy level. Then, a photon, which is a tiny bit of light, passes by. This triggers stimulated emission. The passing photon makes an atom release a new photon. This new photon is identical to the first one.

These photons can trigger even more atoms. This creates a chain reaction.

Most lasers use two mirrors to help. The light bounces back and forth. This makes the light stronger each time. One mirror is a partial mirror, or an output coupler. It lets some light escape as a beam.

This beam is coherent. That means the light waves are all in step. This lets lasers cut metal or perform surgery.
