It works by sending electricity through the gas. This changes the gas to make a beam of light.

The first gas laser was made in 1960. Ali Javan and William R. Bennett, Jr. built it. This was a helium-neon laser. It made light that humans could not see. This is called infrared light.

Many kinds of gas lasers exist today. Carbon dioxide lasers are very strong. They can cut or weld metal in factories.

Excimer lasers use a chemical reaction. These lasers help doctors with eye surgery.

Some lasers use other things for power. Chemical lasers use a reaction to release power fast. They can be very strong. Ion lasers use ions to make light. Metal-vapor lasers use metals to make ultraviolet light.

Gas lasers have many uses. Helium-neon lasers make holograms. They also helped read barcodes in stores. These lasers are good because the parts are cheap. They are also hard to damage. Heat can leave the laser quickly to keep it safe.
