Gas laser

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A gas laser is a special tool that makes light. It works by sending an electric current through a gas. This process turns electrical energy into a beam of light. This was the first kind of laser to make light continuously.

These lasers are very useful in many different jobs. They are hard to damage and the parts are not expensive. They also let heat escape quickly to stay safe.

How does a gas laser work? It uses a way to move molecules. The gas molecules move from a low energy state to a high energy state. This movement creates the laser beam.

Some lasers use a chemical reaction for power instead. These are called chemical lasers. They can release a lot of energy very fast. This makes them very strong and useful for the military.

People first made a gas laser in 1960. An engineer named Ali Javan and a physicist named William R. Bennett, Jr. co-invented it.

Their first model was a helium-neon laser. It made a beam of light in the infrared region. This light was at 1.15 micrometres. This means humans could not see it with their eyes. Scientists used this discovery to build many other types of lasers.

There are many different types of gas lasers today. Carbon dioxide lasers are very strong. They can emit hundreds of kilowatts for cutting or welding metal.

Nitrogen lasers use nitrogen gas to make ultraviolet light at 337.1 nm. Excimer lasers use a special molecule called an excimer. They are used in eye surgery and making computer parts. Argon-ion lasers make light in the visible range. They often use light at 458 nm or 488 nm.

We see the effects of these lasers in our daily lives. Helium-neon lasers were once used to read barcodes in stores. They are also used to make holograms.

In schools, people use helium-neon lasers because they are cheap. They produce a very good beam for science experiments. Even if you do not see them, these lasers help build and fix many things. They turn electricity and gas into amazing light.
