A carbon dioxide laser is a very powerful tool. It creates a beam of infrared light.

You cannot see this light with your eyes. It is a type of heat light. These lasers are very useful in our world today. They are among the highest-power lasers we can use. They are also quite efficient at turning power into light.

The way it works involves a special mix of gases. Inside a sealed tube, there is carbon dioxide and nitrogen. There is also helium and sometimes hydrogen or xenon. First, electrons hit the nitrogen gas to give it energy. This energy stays in the nitrogen for a short time. Then, the nitrogen hits a carbon dioxide molecule. This moves the energy into the carbon dioxide. Finally, the carbon dioxide releases the energy as light. Helium helps by cooling the gas down through collisions. This keeps the whole process working smoothly.

Kumar Patel invented this type of laser in 1964. He worked at Bell Labs when he made it. Since then, it has become one of the most useful lasers. Scientists have learned many ways to build them. Some use a sealed tube for the gases. Others use a flow-through system where gas is pumped through. This allows the laser to keep running. The design can change depending on the job it must do.

Building these lasers requires very special materials. Because the light is infrared, normal glass might not work. Mirrors are often coated in silver or even gold. Lenses and windows are often made of germanium or zinc selenide. Some very high-power lasers even use diamond windows. Diamond is very hard and stays cool easily. In the past, people used salt for lenses. However, salt would break down if it touched moisture in the air.

We use these lasers for many important tasks. Factories use them to cut or weld metal. They can even melt plastic powder to make new parts. Doctors use them for surgery on soft tissue. This is because the light is absorbed well by water. Most living things are made of a lot of water. This helps doctors work with less bleeding and swelling. They even use them in dentistry to help with teeth.
