Language binding

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Computers use many kinds of code. Some code is written in one way. Other code is written in another way. They may not talk to each other.

A binding is like glue. It acts as a bridge. It lets one code use another. This helps code work together.

Many libraries use languages like C or C++. These are system languages. They are often very fast. Other languages like Python or Java are higher-level. This means they are easier for people to use. But these languages cannot always talk to C code directly. A binding acts as a bridge between them. It is a wrapper library. A wrapper is a piece of code that wraps around another. It lets one language use a library from a different language.

People use bindings to reuse software. This means they do not have to write the same code twice. It also helps when an algorithm is hard to write in a new language. Some tools can help make these bridges. One tool is called SWIG. It is an open-source tool. It can make bindings for many different languages. This makes building new software much faster.
