He named it to honor Lawrence Lambe, who had passed away in 1919. Later, Charles W. Gilmore helped clarify the type material for the species.
Lambeosaurus lived in a very specific environment. Their habitat was a coastal plain with meandering rivers. These rivers created separate regions of dense vegetation. The landscape was filled with conifers, ferns, and various shrubs. Many other animals lived there, including fish, mammals, and reptiles. Lambeosaurus shared this space with other megaherbivorous dinosaurs. They lived alongside Corythosaurus and the saurolophine Prosaurolophus. 
To survive alongside other large herbivores, Lambeosaurus occupied a unique feeding niche. Dental wear patterns on their teeth suggest they ate different plants than their neighbors. They preferred more closed habitats and browsed for food low to the ground. This allowed them to avoid direct competition with Prosaurolophus. This specialization helped different species coexist in the same region. 
Physical evidence from skin impressions tells us about the animal's appearance. The skin was covered in unornamented scales across the entire body. Anatomically, Lambeosaurus was built for versatile movement. It could move using either two legs or four legs. It possessed long limbs and a deep tail to help with balance. These physical traits helped them navigate the thick vegetation of the Cretaceous coastal plains.
