Long ago, the Wendat people called it Ouentironk. This name means "Beautiful Water." The Mohawk people used a name that means "where trees stand in the water." This was because people put sticks in the water to catch fish. These sticks were used as fish weirs, which are tools to trap fish.

In the winter, the lake freezes over. It is a famous place for ice fishing.

Some people call it Canada's ice fishing capital. The lake is part of a big system of water. The Severn River flows out of the lake into Georgian Bay. The Talbot River flows into the lake from the east.
