During a time called the African humid period, the lake was huge. People call this ancient, massive lake Mega-Chad. It was so big that it could flow into the Benue River. This river eventually leads to the Atlantic Ocean. Many different groups of people moved to the lake during this time. They became fishermen and started to farm the land. Around 1200 to 1000 BC, people grew pearl millet here.

History shows many strong groups lived near the water. Around 900 AD, the Kanem people formed the Kanem Empire. They lived in the northeast part of the lake. Later, the Bornu Empire became a powerful center. Even the Ottoman Empire reached into this part of Africa.

In the 20th century, European powers like Britain and France arrived. They divided the land into the borders we see today. This changed how the countries around the lake worked together.

Today, the lake is changing because of the weather and people.

Lake Chad is a vital endorheic freshwater lake located in West-Central Africa. An endorheic lake is a body of water that does not flow into an ocean.

This lake sits at the junction of four different countries: Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. It is the heart of the much larger Chad Basin. This basin is an extensional fault depression, which is a type of rift basin. The basin floor consists of Precambrian bedrock. This bedrock is covered by more than 2,000 meters of sedimentary deposits. The lake is a crucial wetland ecosystem for the entire region.

The structure of the lake and its basin is quite complex. The basin is divided into four secondary structural units. These are the southern depression, the northern depression, the central uplift, and the eastern slope. A shallow sill known as the Great Barrier divides the lake into north and south parts.

The southern basin is deeper, with an average depth between 11 and 24 meters. The northern basin is much shallower, ranging from 0 to 5 meters. In the south, the Chari River provides continuous open water. The western part of the southern lake is covered in reed swamps. To the east, sand dunes create an archipelago of islands.

Water enters the lake primarily through river systems. The Chari and Logone rivers are the most important sources. These two rivers provide 95% of the total inflow to Lake Chad. The Yobe River contributes less than 2.5% of the water.

Much of the precipitation that feeds these rivers comes from the Adamawa Plateau. The lake also loses water through seepage. The water seeps underground toward the Bodélé Depression. This is the lowest point in the basin, located northeast of the lake. This process helps maintain the low salinity of the lake water.

The history of this region is defined by massive changes in water levels. During the African humid period, the area supported a massive body of water called Mega-Chad.

Mega-Chad reached a maximum depth of over 150 meters. Its surface area was approximately 360,000 square kilometers. This ancient lake was so large it flowed into the Benue River. This river eventually drains into the Atlantic Ocean via the Niger River. These vast waters allowed Nilo-Saharan ethnic groups to migrate to the area. They established settlements as fishermen and early farmers.

Archaeological evidence shows a long history of settled life near the lake. Around 1200 to 1000 BC, people in the region were growing pearl millet. This is one of the oldest examples of domesticated millet in West Africa. By 500 BC, permanent villages had formed to the south of the lake. One famous group was the Sao civilization. Later, the Kanem people unified nomadic tribes to form the Kanem Empire around 900 AD.

The power center eventually shifted to the Bornu Empire around 1400. Even the Ottoman Empire reached into this region during the 16th century.

In the 20th century, the geography of the region changed due to colonial borders. European powers, including Britain, France, and Germany, occupied the area. The Berlin Conference of 1884–1885 helped define these boundaries. These borders remain largely intact in the modern post-colonial states. However, the new borders created complex political and ethnic challenges. The different countries around the lake have struggled to work together to protect the environment. This lack of cooperation has contributed to the lake's shrinking size.

Climate change and human activity are the main reasons for the lake's decline. In 1870, the lake area was about 25,000 square kilometers. Since the mid-1970s, the area has fluctuated between 1,000 and 25,000 square kilometers. A major drought in the Sahel region during the late 1960s caused severe damage. Vegetation loss from overgrazing and deforestation also plays a role. Additionally, large-scale irrigation projects divert water from the rivers that feed the lake. The lake's surface area is very sensitive to these changes in climate and water use.
