The Benue is a big river.

The Benue is a large river.
Many smaller rivers flow into it. This helps the river grow. It is a big path for boats.
The land near the river is warm. It has a wet season and a dry season. Sometimes, the river flows over the land. This is called a flood. Floods can wash away farms. It is a very important river for the land.
The Benue River is a very large river.
Many smaller rivers flow into the Benue. These are called tributaries. Some are named the Faro and the Gongola. Because the river is so big, boats can travel on it. This makes it an important path for transport.
The name Benue comes from the Tiv language. It means "river or lake of hippos."
The weather near the river is warm all year. There are wet and dry seasons. Sometimes, the river rises too high. This causes a flood. Floods can be very hard on people. In 2022, floods hit many areas in Nigeria. They washed away farmlands and homes. In 2017, a flood in Makurdi moved many people from their houses. In 2012, a flood caused more venomous snakes to appear in some areas. People must work hard to keep the river clean and safe.
The Benue River is a very important waterway in Africa. It is the largest tributary of the Niger River. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one.
This river starts in the Adamawa Plateau in northern Cameroon. It flows west through the town of Garoua and the Lagdo Reservoir. Then, it enters Nigeria south of the Mandara mountains. The water passes through towns like Jimeta, Ibi, and Makurdi. Eventually, it meets the Niger River at a place called Lokoja. Many other rivers flow into it, such as the Faro and the Gongola. The Mayo Kébbi also connects to it during floods.
The weather around the river is very warm. It has a tropical savanna climate. This means it stays warm every month of the year. There are wet seasons and dry seasons. The average temperature is 34 °C. The area also gets about 244 inches of rain each year. It is mostly dry for 169 days in a year. The air often feels damp, with an average humidity of 61%.
Sometimes, the river rises too high and causes floods. These floods can be very hard on people and farms. In 2022, floods hit many areas like Makurdi and Agatu. This disaster moved over 2.4 million people. It also destroyed many farmlands. In 2017, a flood in Makurdi moved 120,000 people from their homes. In 2012, a flood in Bauchi State led to more venomous snakes. This was a hard time for the people living there.
People work hard to keep the river healthy. Some companies have dumped waste like ethanol into the water. This can hurt people and the animals living in the river. The Benue Hike Tourism and Conservation Foundation helps report these problems. The government also works to fix issues caused by water. In 2020, a new drainage channel was finished in Makurdi. This project helps stop erosion and flooding in the Idye Community.
The Benue River is a vital waterway in Africa. It serves as the major tributary to the Niger River. A tributary is a stream or river that flows into a larger main river.
The river begins its journey in the Adamawa Plateau. This area is located in northern Cameroon. From the plateau, the water flows toward the west. It passes through the town of Garoua and the Lagdo Reservoir. The river then enters Nigeria, crossing south of the Mandara mountains. It continues through several important towns, including Jimeta, Ibi, and Makurdi. Finally, it reaches its confluence with the Niger River at Lokoja.
Many other rivers feed into the Benue system. These are known as tributaries. Large tributaries include the Faro, the Gongola, and the Mayo Kébbi. The Mayo Kébbi is unique because it connects the Benue to the Logone River. This connection happens during periods of flooding. The Logone is part of the larger Lake Chad system. Other smaller tributaries that contribute to the river include the Taraba, the Donga, and the Katsina Ala. These various water sources all combine to build the river's strength.
The climate surrounding the river is a tropical savanna climate. This environment is characterized by warmth in every month of the year. This warmth continues through both the wet and dry seasons. The average annual temperature is 34 °C. The region receives about 244 inches of rain every year. The air is often damp, with an average humidity of 61%. However, the area is mainly dry for 169 days out of the year. The UV-index in the region is 7.
Flooding is a significant challenge for the communities near the Benue. In 2022, a massive flood affected many riverine local government areas. This included places like Makurdi, Agatu, Logo, Guma, Buruku, Otukpo, and Gwer-West. The disaster was widespread across Nigeria's 36 states. It submerged hundreds of villages and urban centers. Over 2.4 million people were unsettled by this event. More than 600 fatalities were recorded. Huge areas of farmland were also swept away by the water. Within three months, 12 local government areas were submerged. This affected 82,730 residents and 13,788 households.
Past floods have also caused different kinds of danger. In 2017, flooding in Makurdi displaced over 120,000 people. It devastated more than 200 households in the capital city. In 2012, the river flooded in Bauchi State. This caused a large increase in the population of venomous snakes in the Duguri District. A report from 2013 showed that over 200 people died from snakebites there. To help, the General Hospital in Kaltungo, Gombe State, provides treatment. Patients who reach the hospital can often return home after two days of care.
Protecting the river from pollution is a major concern for the government. The Benue Hike Tourism and Conservation Foundation works to protect the water. They have reported companies that empty waste into the river. One example is the dumping of ethanol. This substance can cause damage to both human and aquatic life. In response, the Benue State Government has attempted to address these issues. To fight erosion and flooding, President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated a project in 2020. This was a 3.35-km drainage channel in the Idye Community of Makurdi. The project was part of 17 ecological intervention projects. It was completed in 48 weeks to help the local area.
