The Zala River brings most of the water into the lake. The Sió is the only river that flows out. The lake is very shallow. Its average depth is only about 3.3 meters.

This makes the lake look very wide across the land.

The lake has a special type of weather called a microclimate. It gets more rain than most of Hungary. This means there are more cloudy days. The weather is not as extreme as in other places.

The soil has volcanic rock in it. This soil and the warm air are great for growing grapes. People have been making wine here for 2,000 years. This started even during the time of the Romans.

History has shaped the area around the water for a long time. The Romans called the lake Pelso.

In the year 846, a Slavic prince named Pribina built a fortress nearby. His capital was called Blatnohrad, which means Swamp Fortress. Later, the lake was part of many battles during the Ottoman wars. In March 1945, a large battle called the Lake Balaton Offensive happened here. This was part of the second World War.

Many different people visit the lake for holidays every year. The peak season is from June to August.

In the summer, the water temperature stays around 24 degrees Celsius. This makes it great for swimming. The north shore has hills and many wine regions. The south shore is flat and has many resort towns. Towns like Siófok and Keszthely are very popular. Some people like the music festivals in Zamárdi. Others visit the Festetics Palace in Keszthely.

The lake is also a very busy home for many living things. About fifty of Hungary's native freshwater fish live in the water. You might find pike-perch or northern pike there. A huge belt of reeds grows along the shore. This belt is more than 100 kilometers long.
