This food was a mixture of 40% bread crumbs, 40% powdered meat, and 20% beef fat, combined with agar and water. 
Laika's spacecraft, Sputnik 2, included several complex life-support systems. It featured an oxygen generator and devices to absorb carbon dioxide and prevent oxygen poisoning. A fan was also included to activate if the cabin temperature rose too high. To monitor her health, Laika was fitted with sensors connected to an electrocardiogram. These tools tracked her heart rate, respiration rate, and maximum arterial pressure. Because the cabin was so small, a harness and chains were used to restrict her to standing, sitting, or lying down. There was simply no room for her to turn around.

Other reports suggested she died on day six when her oxygen was depleted. It was not until 2002 that scientist Dimitri Malashenkov revealed the truth about the overheating. He explained that it was nearly impossible to create a reliable temperature control system within the limited time available. The Sputnik 2 satellite continued to orbit for several months, completing 2,570 orbits before disintegrating during re-entry on 14 April 1958.
Laika's mission sparked intense global debates regarding the ethics of animal testing. While the Space Race dominated news headlines, animal rights groups expressed deep concern. In the United Kingdom, the National Canine Defence League asked owners to observe a minute of silence for her. Protests were held at Soviet embassies and the United Nations.
