A man named Alfredo joins the crowd to sing a brindisi, which is a drinking song. He tells Violetta that he loves her, but she is unsure about her feelings. Later, the two characters live together in a quiet country house outside of Paris. This peaceful time ends when Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, arrives. He asks Violetta to leave his son to protect his family's reputation. Violetta must decide between her own happiness and what is right for others.

Giuseppe Verdi wrote the music for this masterpiece.

He worked with a writer named Francesco Maria Piave to create the libretto, or the sung text. The idea came after Verdi and his partner, Giuseppina Strepponi, saw a play in Paris. That play was called "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexandre Dumas fils. Verdi began composing the music almost immediately after seeing it. He wanted to create a story that felt like it belonged to his own modern age.

The first performance happened on March 6, 1853, at La Fenice in Venice.

It was a very difficult night for Verdi. The theater leaders would not let him set the story in modern times. Instead, they forced him to set it in the 1700s. The audience was not kind to the lead singer, Fanny Salvini-Donatelli. They felt she was too old to play a young woman. Verdi was so upset that he wrote to a friend calling the night a failure.

Even though the start was hard, the opera eventually became a huge success.
